What Happens When You Work With a Nutritionist

Thinking about working with a nutritionist - but not sure what to expect?

If you’ve been considering getting support with your nutrition, but feel unsure about what the process actually involves - I’ll walk you through it here.

Many of the women I work with have tried multiple approaches over the years - from diets, to meal plans, to “starting again on Monday.” It’s common to feel hesitant about investing in something new without knowing how it will be different.

This article will walk you through exactly what it looks like to work with me, so you can feel more clear about whether it’s the right fit for you.

First, it’s probably not what you’re expecting

When people think about working with a nutritionist, they might imagine:

  • Being told exactly what to eat

  • Following a strict meal plan

  • Removing all foods that bring joy

That’s not how I work.

My approach is non-restrictive, evidence-based, and personalised to you. Rather than focusing on strict food rules or short-term fixes, we look at what’s actually driving your current patterns - whether that’s changes in appetite, energy, sleep, stress, or your relationship with food.

The goal is to create changes that feel realistic, sustainable, and still allow you to enjoy the foods you love.

What the process actually looks like

1. The initial consultation (60 minutes)

This is where we take a deep dive into your health, your history, and what’s been going on for you.

We’ll explore:

  • Your current eating patterns and routines

  • Your health history, symptoms, and any relevant blood work

  • Symptoms or changes you may have noticed (eg energy, weight, sleep, digestion)

  • Your relationship with food and past experiences with dieting

  • What you’ve already tried - and what has or hasn’t worked

The aim is for me to get a great understanding of your health picture and lifestyle so we can align our goals and priorities appropriately.

2. A personalised plan

Following your initial consultation, I’ll provide individualised guidance based on what we’ve discussed.

This can look different from person to person, but could include:

  • Practical nutrition strategies aligned with your goals

  • Meal and snack ideas that fit your food preferences and routine

  • Guidance around hunger, fullness, and eating patterns

  • Support for specific concerns (eg blood sugar regulation, cravings, gut health, weight changes)

  • Practitioner-grade supplements if required

  • Recommendations or referrals for further blood tests and/or investigations if needed

3. Follow-up sessions

This is where we really make progress and build consistency over time.

In follow-ups, we:

  • Review what’s been working and what hasn’t

  • Monitor symptoms, bloodwork and other relevant health markers

  • Adjust your plan as needed

  • Work through challenges together

Some shifts may happen quite quickly, others may take a little longer. I’m here to meet you where you’re at and provide you with the strategies and resources needed to make meaningful and sustainable improvements in your health.

What kind of results can you expect?

While everyone’s goals are different, many people notice:

  • More stable energy throughout the day

  • Feeling more in control of their eating

  • No more “all-or-nothing” patterns

  • More well regulated hunger and fewer cravings

  • Improved relationship with food

  • Greater understanding around what works for their body

For some, this also includes changes in weight, digestion, hormonal or metabolic health - but the focus is always on creating a foundation that supports long-term wellbeing.

Common questions

Will I be given a strict meal plan?

No - the focus is on building a way of eating that works for you and realistically fits your life, rather than following rigid rules.

Do I need to be “ready” or motivated?

Not at all. Many people come in feeling stuck or unsure - that’s part of what we work through together.

What if I’ve tried everything before?

This is very common. Often it’s that previous approaches haven’t been personalised or sustainable.

Are consultations online?

Yes - all consultations are held online so you can join from the comfort and flexibility of your own home, wherever you’re based.

Can health insurance cover our consultations?

It depends on your provider and level of cover - some health insurance plans allow you to claim for consultations with Registered Nutritionists. Double check with your insurance provider to see if your plan does cover this. Health insurance allowances reset every year, so it’s great to make the most of this if it is included for you.
